Recent work from the Environmental Working Group finds that among 952 sunscreen products on the market, 4 out of 5 do not provide adequate protection or contain questionable ingredients. Yikes. From their cosmetic database site:
Leading brands were the worst offenders: None of market leader Coppertone’s 41 sunscreen products met EWG’s criteria for safety and effectiveness, and only 1 of 103 products from Banana Boat and Neutrogena, the second- and third-largest manufacturers, are recommended by EWG.
It really is eye-opening to read about mis-leading claims of protection and the use of potentially harmful. The site provides a sortable list of sunscreens that’s really easy to use.
A little poking around on related legislation and/or regulation finds an industry influencing the FDA to deliberately drag its feet around revising its rules and classifications. So, the FDA must have its hand held by legislators, wasting their time and sacrificing the long term health of U.S. consumers.
